Celebrating Social Work Week

You can imagine my surprise and excitement when I heard that I am one of two recipients to receive the Inspirational Leaders in the Field of Social Work Award during Social Work Week (March 5 – 11, 2012) from the Ontario Association of Social Workers.

The award is in its 10th year. Here is the criteria:

– extraordinary contribution
– positive role model
– inspirational leader
– theme – social workers help people get back on track

With this award, the recipient gets $500, which I chose to donate to the Regent Park School of Music.

I am honoured to receive this award and thank everyone for their support and encouragement.

Also the OASW is offering members a free webinar this Wednesday evening. Here are the details:

 Mary K. Armstrong, MSW, RSW

Hearing Disclosures of Child Sexual Abuse

To her surprise, dismay, and eventually relief, Mary Armstrong, a therapist specializing in helping people heal from childhood trauma, uncovered her own history of child sexual abuse at the hands of her grandfather and father. As she tells her harrowing but heroic tale in her recently-published book, Confessions of a Trauma Therapist: A Memoir of Healing and Transformation, she casts light as never before on the issue of repressed memories and the invisible wounds left by childhood trauma.

In this webinar, Mary will speak about disclosing child sexual abuse. What is it like for the victim who is starting to tell? As a professional, how do you respond to disclosures when 1) the client enters therapy with memories intact, 2) when the client has come into therapy because memories are beginning to surface, 3) when clients recover memories while in therapy?

Mary K. Armstrong, MSW, RSW is a long-time OASW member and was the Founder and Director of the Centre for Focusing in Toronto. She operated a private psychotherapy practice for over thirty years.
